Pictures of local government offices being bombarded with potatoes or cartloads of cauliflowers being thrown into the streets of Quimper or Morlaix by angry growers are regular sights on the front pages of French newspapers. Indeed, Brittany, as the premier vegetable-growing region of Europe, producing one million tonnes annually on 70,000 ha (173,000 acres) of cultivated land between Brest and Saint Malo, is greatly affected by fluctuations in world prices.
